House in Mértola

Located in the historic center of Mértola, a vernacular house was carefully rehabilitated with deep respect for its architectural heritage. Every decision in the intervention aimed to preserve the authenticity of the existing structure — from the irregular whitewashed volumes to the timber ceilings and handcrafted tile floors.

The rehabilitation followed traditional construction techniques and materials, reinforcing the character of the original building rather than altering it. Subtle contemporary additions were integrated with restraint, always in dialogue with the house’s historical identity.

Recognising this delicate balance between past and present, the project was nominated for Building of the Year 2023 by ArchDaily.
